Choosing A Degree

Emergency Management Associate Degree: Plan Your Next Step

An emergency management associate degree can give you a defined first stage of college study. Its value depends on what follows: using the coursework in your current job, applying for work that matches your qualifications, or continuing into a bachelor's program. Decide which of those you need before you compare tuition.

Emergency Management Associate Degree Examples

The award appears as an Associate of Arts, Associate of Science and Associate of Applied Science. These examples are in alphabetical order. Each source describes the school’s own structure, so the table is a starting point for comparing curricula and transfer plans.

Examples of emergency management associate degrees
School and programPublished structureWhat to examine
Embry-Riddle A.S. in Emergency Management60 credits, onlineThe program emphasizes incident command and the national preparedness cycle.
Forsyth Tech Emergency Management A.A.S.Two-year plan, online classesReview the mix of public safety, management and general education courses.
Waldorf A.A. in Emergency Management60 credits, online onlyWaldorf identifies a continuation path into its related bachelor's degrees.

Waldorf allocates 45 credits to general education and 15 to the major. Inspect both parts of a curriculum when planning further study.

Forsyth Tech's published course plan includes sociology of disaster, mitigation and preparedness, emergency operations center management, and response and recovery. Those subjects help you compare the content of an emergency management associate degree with your interests. They don't establish that the degree meets a particular employer's hiring requirements.

Build the Bachelor's Transfer Plan Before Choosing Electives

Start with the destination. Use our bachelor's rankings to identify programs whose subject, cost and delivery fit you, then ask those universities to evaluate the associate curriculum. A promise to accept credits is less useful than a written explanation of the requirements those credits satisfy.

Waldorf connects its A.A. with upper-division entry into its emergency management or homeland security bachelor's programs. Compare the related degrees on our Iowa program page, then confirm your individual plan.

Idaho State offers online associate, bachelor's and master's study in homeland security and emergency management. Its bachelor's also appears in our degree comparison. A department that teaches several levels gives you a place to ask about progression, but you should still request the actual degree plan and admission requirements for each step.

  1. Name the receiving degree. Record the exact major and catalog year, rather than asking whether a university accepts transfer students in general.
  2. Map the courses. Ask which credits meet general education, major and elective requirements.
  3. Check the remaining study. Ask about upper-division coursework, university residency requirements and any internship or capstone.
  4. Get a completion estimate. Have an advisor outline the terms still needed at your intended course load.
  5. Price the whole route. Add the associate stage and the remaining bachelor's stage, including fees and required travel.

Connect an Emergency Management Associate Degree to Real Job Requirements

Pull actual job descriptions in the region where you intend to work. Separate the education requirement from the experience requirement and any role-specific training. Then compare each with what you already have and what the program adds. A broad career list on a college website is not an offer or an employer's minimum qualification.

For the director role, BLS describes a bachelor's degree and substantial related work experience as the typical preparation. An emergency management associate degree is therefore better evaluated as a stage in your plan than as a shortcut to senior management. Our director career guide explains the wider route.

If you already work in public safety, ask your employer which coursework would help you take on planning or coordination duties. If you're new to the field, investigate supervised internship options while you study. Keep the conversation specific to the job you want and the experience you can build.

Compare Total Cost and Transfer Fit Together

Request a written estimate using your residency, course load and accepted credits. Include required fees, books and any extra terms created by course sequencing. Then compare the cost to finish the bachelor's directly with the cost to complete both stages. The useful figure is the price of your route, not an advertised rate detached from the credits you still need.

Check scholarship enrollment rules before changing to part-time study. If you want to sample the subject before applying, free introductory emergency management courses can help you understand its vocabulary. Treat that training and a college degree as separate commitments until a college evaluates the credit.

Questions About an Emergency Management Associate Degree

Can I earn an emergency management associate degree online?

Yes. Embry-Riddle offers its A.S. online, Waldorf describes its A.A. as online only, and Forsyth Tech lists online classes for its A.A.S. Check the current schedule and any placement requirements before enrolling.

How long does an emergency management associate degree take?

Waldorf estimates two years with full-time enrollment for its 60-credit A.A., and Forsyth Tech lists two years for its A.A.S. Your timeline depends on your course load, accepted prior credit and when required courses run.

Will the associate degree transfer into a bachelor’s?

Ask the receiving university for a course-by-course evaluation and a list of remaining requirements. Get the answer before choosing electives, even when the schools have a transfer agreement.

Does an associate degree qualify me to become an emergency management director?

Do not treat the degree as a direct qualification for a director appointment. BLS describes a bachelor’s degree and substantial related experience as the typical route. Read the actual job requirements, and use the associate degree to plan further study and relevant experience.
